Philippine History Portal

links to primary sources, historical questions, local histories, and teaching resources

What can you find on this site?

  • links to eyewitness accounts of key events in Philippine history (Pigafetta's chronicle, Rizal's diaries, Jose Abad Santos' letters), and

important historical documents (Philippine declaration of independence, Rizal's works, versions of the Philippine constitution)

  • links to classic interpetations of historical questions (Constantino's Veneration without Understanding)
  • links to provincial histories and tips in using primary sources and historical documents in the teaching of Philippine history (soon)

Why primary sources?

  • Many students consider the study of history as boring and uninteresting.
  • Use of primary sources enliven history and allows the student to experience vicariously (i.e. through reading) what others experienced as they lived through history.
  • Simply put, use of primary sources puts the story back in history.
