Pilippine History Primary Sources

eyewitness accounts, important historical documents, classic interpretations

What can you find on this site?

  • eyewitness accounts of key events in Philippine history (Pigafetta's chronicle, Rizal's diaries, Jose Abad Santos' letters)
  • important historical documents (Philippine declaration of independence, Rizal's works, versions of the Philippine constitution)
  • classic interpetations of historical questions (Constantino's Veneration without Understanding)
  • tips in using primary sources and historical documents in the teaching of Philippine history (soon)

Why primary sources?

  • Many students consider the study of history as boring and uninteresting.
  • Use of primary sources enliven history and allows the student to experience vicariously (i.e. through reading) what others experienced as they lived through history.
  • Simply put, use of primary sources puts the story back in history.
